The West African Youth Assembly (WAYA) has issued a pressing call for the immediate and unconditional release of its detained members, including Vice Chairlady Fatoumata Kaba and Secretary General Salim Jabbi, following their arrest during a peaceful demonstration in The Gambia on August 25, 2025. The organization expressed deep concern over the detention of these individuals and several other young activists, labeling the arrests as a violation of constitutionally protected civic rights.

The demonstration aimed to highlight the challenging living conditions and escalating socio-economic difficulties faced by many Gambian citizens. WAYA emphasized that such peaceful protests are a vital avenue for citizens, particularly the youth, to voice their concerns and hold leaders accountable. However, the arrests have created an environment of apprehension among those advocating for justice and accountability, the group stated.

In a statement released from its regional secretariat in Monrovia, WAYA urged Gambian authorities to take three critical actions. First, they demand the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals detained during the protest. Second, they call for the upholding and respect of fundamental human rights, including freedom of assembly, speech, and association, in alignment with The Gambian Constitution and international conventions ratified by the state. Third, they advocate for proactive measures to engage with the youth constructively, addressing their concerns rather than suppressing their voices.

WAYA stands in solidarity with Gambian youth and all civil societies across West Africa, advocating for democracy, justice, and accountability. The organization believes that open dialogue and active engagement are essential to addressing the country’s challenges, rather than resorting to suppression. They have also called upon civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to closely monitor the situation and support initiatives aimed at securing the release of the detained youths.

The arrests have raised significant concerns regarding justice and legality, according to WAYA, which sees the detentions as a threat to democratic principles. The organization’s statement underscores the importance of protecting the rights of young people to express their grievances peacefully.
