Women in STEM Gambia Launches New Chapter to Empower Young Girls in STEM

Women in STEM Gambia has officially inaugurated a new chapter at the West African International School Academy, marking a significant step in its mission to support and empower young girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The launch event took place on Friday and was attended by key figures, including Kodou Jeng, the President of Women in STEM Gambia; volunteers; Madam Juka Jabang, the school’s proprietor; Mrs. Jammeh, the school principal; teachers; and enthusiastic female students.

The program began with a warm welcome from a student host, followed by motivating remarks from Mrs.Jammeh and the school’s teacher coordinator.

President Kodou Jeng addressed the audience, detailing the association’s mission and activities. She emphasized the importance of supporting young girls in STEM, highlighting that early mentorship, access to resources, and encouragement are crucial for empowering them to pursue successful careers in these fields.

In her address, Jeng also discussed the significance of STEM education in The Gambia, noting its essential role in promoting economic growth, fostering innovation, and addressing pressing national challenges.

She pointed out that STEM education is vital for tackling issues such as climate change, healthcare, and unemployment. Jeng concluded by stressing that investing in STEM education offers valuable opportunities for young people, especially girls, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to national development and global progress.

The event also featured the announcement of the school chapter’s executive committee and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Women in STEM Gambia and the West African International School Academy.

The gathering concluded with a group photo, symbolizing the spirit of collaboration and commitment to empowering the next generation of female STEM leaders.
According to organizers, This newly launched chapter signifies an important advancement in Women in STEM Gambia’s ongoing initiatives to provide young girls with the opportunities and guidance necessary to succeed in these fields.
