In a significant milestone for representation and leadership, Yai Ceesay, a Gambian immigrant in the United States, has been appointed the Asset Manager for King County’s Homeownership Program, becoming the first African and Gambian woman to occupy this role.

With a firm commitment to affordable housing and economic empowerment, Ceesay aims to ensure that low- and middle-income families in Washington State have access to homeownership and affordable housing options.

Expressing her gratitude and ambition, the young Gambian Immigrant told TAT: “I am honored to serve in this capacity and hope to make Gambia proud. Homeownership and affordable housing are vital steps toward financial stability, and my goal is to expand access to affordable housing solutions that help families build a strong foundation.”

She emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of housing challenges. “While some refer to the current housing realities as a crisis, affordability is the real issue. There is no housing crisis in Washington State—an affordability issue. We must focus on creating pathways for hardworking families to rent and own homes without being priced out of the market,” she asserted.

With extensive experience in property and asset management, Ceesay brings a wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas to her new position. She is dedicated to implementing strategies that make homeownership and low-income rentals more accessible and strives to ensure equitable housing opportunities for all communities.

Her appointment serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of perseverance and a steadfast commitment to positive change in the housing sector.
