The Abubakar Jawara civil suit against Momodou Sabally for “defamation” has been adjourned for mention on January 17, 2023, at noon.
The case was adjourned pending the filing of defense by the defendant. However, the defendant has offered to file a claim in 10 days explaining why the case should not succeed.
In October 2022, Momodou Sabally was served a writ of summoning to appear before the High Court in Banjul on November 14, 2022, to respond to a civil suit filed against him by businessman Abubakar Jawara.
Plaintiff claims D8,000,000 for defamation, slander, and an order directing the defendant to issue an unreserved apology, among others.
At the beginning of sittings at the Banjul High Court annex on Monday, the Plaintiff’s lawyer, Counsel Drammeh said people might make statements likely to undermine the court’s integrity, arguing that the defendant’s supporters did so.
Following this claim by Counsel Drammeh, the judge hearing the case, Justice Ademola Bakre, issued strict instructions to people attending proceedings, saying he won’t allow anyone with no interest in the case in the courtroom.
Day one of the case attracted many of Momodou Sabally’s supporters and sympathizers who came to show solidarity and support for the former Gambian Minister as he battles with the business tycoon, Jawara.
