Scorpions hold first training session in Morocco ahead of friendlies

The senior national team of The Gambia held their first training session in Morocco ahead of their three test matches against the Morocco CHAN team, Sierra Leone and South Sudan.

The team that arrived in EL Jadida, Morocco comprised some notable names like Babucarr Steve Trawally, Lamin Jallow, Ebrima Sohna among others.

Head coach Tom Saintfiet has called a 26-man squad for the country’s training camp and test matches in Morocco between October 4 to 12 in the upcoming FIFA international window.

The camp is part of the Scorpions’ preparations ahead of the January AFCON in Cameroon.

Abdoulie Sanyang, Ebrima Colley and Hamza Barry all missed out due to injuries. Sulayman Marreh and Muhammed Badamosi both returned to the squad after recovering from injury and the England-based duo of Ibou Touray and Ebou Adams have been included in the Belgian’s squad.

Another notable returnee is Modou Barrow, who requested permission to miss the September window.

The Scorpions will begin their test matches with a training game against Morocco’s CHAN team on 7th October, before playing their official international game against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone and fellow AFCON debutants two days later.

Tom and his charges will ultimately wrap up the camp against the Bright Stars of South Sudan on 12th October.

The Scorpions will make their AFCON debut against Mauritania on 12th January 2022.

The test games are expected to provide Coach Saintfiet the chance to continue working on his team’s strength as well as increase squad depth ahead of the continental football showpiece.

He later joined The Standard Newspaper in Banjul as Editorial Assistant and Head of News. Mr. Marenah is known for covering some of the most critical stories during the former and current administrations, including high-profile treason cases involving former military chiefs from 2009 to 2012. After his arrest and imprisonment by the previous regime of President Yahya Jammeh in 2014, he relocated to Dakar, Senegal, where he continues to work as a freelance journalist for various local and international media organizations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, VOA, and ZDF TV in Germany. He is also a co-founder of the Banjul-based Media Center for Research and Development, an institution dedicated to research and development initiatives. As a journalist and communication expert dedicated to supporting the Gambia's transitional process, Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah plays a significant role in developing a media and communications platform aimed at enhancing civic participation and raising awareness of the requirements for transitional governance. His efforts contribute to the country's ongoing movement toward democratization. In addition to his work in Gambia, Mr. Marenah has traveled extensively across Europe, Africa, and the United States as a professional journalist and has participated in various local and international media training programs. He is currently based in the United States.
