The National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) has named Ms. Lala Touray its new Deputy Executive Director, a move hailed as a significant step toward advancing youth empowerment in The Gambia.

Touray, a prominent youth leader, brings a wealth of experience in governance, gender justice, and youth advocacy, positioning her to drive NYSS’s mission of fostering national development through youth engagement.

Touray’s appointment, announced on September 3, 2025, has sparked widespread optimism among youth organizations and civic groups. NYSS leadership praised her extensive background, noting that her expertise will bolster the organization’s efforts to equip young Gambians with skills and opportunities for growth. “Ms. Touray’s leadership and passion for youth development align perfectly with our vision,” the NYSS statement read.

As a former senior program officer at the National Democratic Institute, Touray has an impressive track record of working with national and international institutions. She has worked with the International Republican Institute, the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), and the National Assembly, where she championed policies for inclusive governance. As a representative of Gambian youth at the National Youth Council and the Commonwealth Youth Council, she has been a vocal advocate for youth inclusion in decision-making processes.

Touray’s global influence extends to partnering with organizations like the National Endowment for Democracy, FemNET, and the African Women Leadership Forum. Her commitment to gender justice and leadership has earned her accolades, including the prestigious 2024 U.S. Embassy Excellence in Civic Engagement Award. An alumna of the Mandela Washington Fellowship and the Nelson Mandela School’s Women in Leadership program, Touray is recognized for her ability to inspire and mobilize communities.

Reflecting on her appointment, Touray expressed gratitude and determination to serve. “I am deeply honored to join NYSS and contribute to its transformative work,” she said. “The youth of The Gambia are our greatest asset, and I am committed to creating opportunities that empower them to lead and shape our nation’s future.” Her vision includes expanding skills development programs, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting civic engagement among young people.

Touray’s appointment is critical as The Gambia seeks to harness its youthful population for sustainable development. With over 60% of the population under 30, NYSS provides training, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. Touray’s leadership is expected to strengthen these efforts, particularly in rural and marginalized communities.

Stakeholders have lauded the appointment, with many citing Touray’s grassroots connections and global perspective as key strengths. “Lala is a bridge between local aspirations and global opportunities,” said a youth leader. “Her appointment signals a bright future for Gambian youth.”

As Touray steps into her new role, expectations are high that her leadership will inspire a new generation of Gambian youth to take active roles in nation-building, cementing her legacy as a transformative figure in youth empowerment.
