The Leader of Gambia Moral Congress, Mai Ahmad Fatty has said his party is hopeful that the Independent Electoral Commission will do the right thing to ‘correct errors’ and allow him to join the six qualified candidates to contest the Dec 4 presidential election.
“We are optimistic that the error made by the IEC would be corrected, and we would join others in a contest of ideas to present attractive policy alternatives to the electorate,” Fatty, a lawyer turned politician said on Sunday morning in a statement released while congratulating his peers cleared by IEC to run for President.
“I wish to congratulate all those who have been duly nominated, Fatty added, saying: “As we vigorously pursue our right of appeal against the improper rejection of our nomination bid, using all legal avenues, I wish to congratulate all those who have been duly nominated. We consider this a temporary set-back and a clear test of our Faith. In both adversity and times of ease, we must always renew our Faith in Allah and Praise His Glory. And indeed we thank and Praise Allah ad infinitum, for this new opportunity to renew our unflinching Faith in His Omnipotence.’
His statement further reads: “ This temporary challenge we experienced, has not by any means negatively impacted our confidence in Gambian democracy; our strong confidence in the promise of our country’s future remains unshakable. We are resolute in our resolve to lift our peoples out of poverty, resolve the perennial issue of youth unemployment, food security, better and affordable healthcare, an education revolution that transform lives, affordable and secure energy supply, general access to clean, potable water, real reforms, especially security sector reform, gender equity and deliver better standard of living for our peoples and more…”
He urged his supporters to remain calm as they explore legal avenues to challenge the IEC’s decision.
“ For GMC supporters, and non GMC members who have confidence in my patriotism, I urge you to remain calm. We shall follow due process and every legal recourse available. I have confidence in the rule of law and in The Gambian judiciary. As a Faith Nation, we must never forget that ultimately, God is always in control of our affairs. I am a proud Gambian, and my conviction to serve has been further stultified by this new challenge. We shall emerge stronger as a country, more united in our determination for collective prosperity and in building a Gambia of our dream.”
