The Executive Board of the Gambia Press Union has promoted Modou S. Joof to the position of Secretary General of the GPU. Mr Joof who was the Senior Programme Officer assumed the new position today, 1st February 2022.
Joof holds a first degree in political science and an advanced diploma in journalism. In his more than 13 years of professional journalism experience, Joof rose through the ranks from a cub reporter to an editor with reputable national dailies and freelance correspondent for international media outlets, including Bloomberg. He is also an accredited journalism trainer.
Reacting to his promotion, Joof told The Alkamba Times: ” I thank the GPU Board for the trust and confidence they have in me to lead the Secretariat. I am aware that this is a new challenge and the expectations are high, but this will be a motivating factor for both the Board and the Secretariat to work harder towards achieving our common objectives.
“As a team, we will continue working to promote and protect press freedom and freedom of expression, and also the safety and welfare of the members of the Gambia Press Union.
“The previous Board and former Secretary General have laid a good foundation and made tremendous achievements. We intend to build on these for the growth of the Union and improved conditions for media workers, including enhancing professionalism within the media sector.”
