Hon. Muhammed Kanteh, National Assembly Member (NAM) for Busumbala Constituency, narrowly escaped death and injury in a road traffic accident on Sunday evening while returning from Niani Dobo Gamo, the hometown of his party leader.
The incident occurred around 7:00am at Tento Jamwelly in the Upper Saloum District.
According to a report from Njau, Hon. Kanteh was driving his vehicle, registered as NAM 0316L, from Nyanga Bantang when a donkey cart suddenly crossed his path. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved off the road and struck a NAWEC high-tension electricity pole.
The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle. Two passengers onboard sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to Njau Health Center for treatment. No fatalities were reported, and Hon. Kanteh himself survived the crash unharmed.
Police at Njau Station confirmed a Road Traffic Accident (RTA) with no deaths.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances, though initial accounts point to the sudden appearance of the donkey cart as the triggering factor.
The accident comes shortly after Hon. Kanteh attended the annual Niani Dobo Gamo, a significant cultural and religious gathering that drew political figures from across the country on 4th April 2026.
Hon. Kanteh, who has represented Busumbala since 2022 as an independent lawmaker, is known for his active participation in National Assembly debates, including recent exchanges on national security and governance issues.
Residents in the Central River Region have expressed relief that the lawmaker and his companions escaped serious harm, while calling for improved road safety measures along the route, which sees frequent animal crossings and heavy traffic during events.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during evening hours and in areas with mixed road users, including livestock carts.
