The Gambia forward Fatoumatta Dukureh has been shortlisted for the CAF Interclub Player of the Year Award (Women).
The versatile attacker has been included in a 20-woman competitive list including Ghanian Evelyn Badu, Dlamini Andili of South Africa, and Cameroon’s Rose Bella.
The former Abuko United ace has been rewarded for her outstanding performances for Egyptian giants Wadi Deglia during the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in Cairo last November.
Dukureh, 24, inked her name in the history books of African Women’s football when she helped the 12-time Egyptian champions, Wadi Deglia, beat Malian giants AS Mande 3-1 at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium.
The Gambian forward scored the second goal before assisting the third to give the hosts a deserved victory over WAFU A champions and Malian outfit AS Mande.
“It came to me as a surprise, but I’m so joyous to be part of the first-ever Women’s Championship (Interclub) nominees,” the American-Gambian told TAT.
Fatoumatta played in all three group matches after Wadi Delia failed to make the last four of the tournament on goal difference. Equatorial Guinea side Malabo Kings had a better goal difference.
Dukureh adds to the number of Gambians shortlisted for the 2022 CAF Awards following the nominations of Musa Barrow (Player of the Year), James Gomez (Young Player of the Year), Tom Saintfiet (Coach of the Year) and The Gambia Senior National Team (The Scorpions) in the Men’s categories.
A voting panel will decide the winners of each category: CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations, and clubs involved in the group stage of the Interclub competitions.
The CAF Awards 2022 will be held ahead of the final of Africa’s flagship women’s competitions, TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022, scheduled to take place between 02 July – 23 July 2022. The event will also coincide with the second anniversary of the launch of the CAF Women’s Football Strategy.
