Lecce forward Assan Ceesay has won the Gambia fan’s best foreign-based player of the year for 2022.

The former FC Zuerich talisman amassed 50% of the votes, while Modou Barrow finished 2nd and James Gomez finished 3rd, respectively.

This is the second time the Scorpion record holder has won the award after winning it in 2018.

Assan recorded 20 goals and ten assists at the club level in 33 games. He finished as runner-up in both the Golden boot and assist chart. Ceesay was instrumental as FC Zuerich won its first league title since the 2008/09 season.

On June 16th, he joined newly promoted Serie A side Lecce and made his debut against Inter Milan, finding the equalizer in the 48th minute.

Ceesay, currently valued at €3M, has played 15 Serie A matches and scored on three occasions.

On the national level, Ceesay played ten matches in 2022 for Gambia and scored the deceive goal against Chad as the Scorpions returned to AFCON qualifiers with a win.

Assan has 34 caps and 13 goals for the Scorpions of Gambia.

“I’m grateful; if you look at where I was ten years ago and where I am, it’s progress. I am working hard for my career, and it’s going in the right direction with the support of my family, fans, and the Gambia,” Ceesay told TAT Sports after winning the accolade.

“I am proud of myself; I am thrilled at this stage. I am looking forward to achieving many things,” Ceesay added.
