In a ceremony held at the State House today, President Adama Barrow presided over the presentation of medical supplies and equipment valued at over USD 12 million—equivalent to more than 900 million Dalasis—donated by the Cornerstone Foundation in partnership with MAP International.

Described by President Barrow as the largest single health-related contribution in Gambian history, the donation includes a wide range of essential medical items and equipment designed to significantly enhance healthcare delivery nationwide.

Speaking at the event, President Barrow expressed profound gratitude to the Cornerstone Group of Companies, MAP International, and the leadership of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) for their patriotic commitment. He praised the donors for their dedication to saving lives and strengthening the nation’s health system.

“The Cornerstone Foundation’s generosity sets a powerful example for the private sector,” the President said. “National development is a collective responsibility, and I urge other businesses to follow this inspiring lead.”

He also commended Dr. Mustapha Bittaye and the country’s medical professionals for their sacrifices, reaffirming the government’s pledge to modernize healthcare facilities and improve working conditions for frontline staff.

Chief Executive Officer of Cornerstone Olley Faal, who represented the organization at the ceremony, expressed pride in the donation and highlighted the importance of strong government-private sector collaboration. “This is not just about giving back—it is about building a healthier, stronger Gambia for future generations,” Faal said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Yusupha Touray, conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the donors and commended President Barrow for his unwavering focus on advancing healthcare services nationwide.

The Cornerstone Foundation has a proven track record of supporting the Gambian health sector. Earlier this year, the foundation donated over one million Dalasis worth of medicine and funded major infrastructure projects, including solar power for EFSTH’s operating theatre and the renovation of the Paediatric Surgical Unit.

Alagie Sanyang, CEO and Chairman of the Cornerstone Group, was present at the event alongside his team, underscoring the organization’s deep-rooted commitment to social impact beyond profit. The donation was hailed as a defining moment for the health sector and a testament to the transformative power of purposeful leadership.
