In a surprising development, sources close to the Department of Parks and Wildlife have reported the arrest and detention of its director, Momodou Gassama.
According to insiders, officers from the Gambia Police Force apprehended Director Gassama at his office in the Abuko Nature Reserve on Friday, January 24, 2025, between 10 and 11 a.m., subsequently escorting him to the Police Headquarters in Banjul.
Two sources within the department confirmed the arrest and detention, but details regarding the reasons behind these actions remain undisclosed. Additional sources hinted at a strained relationship between Director Gassama and the Minister of Environment, Rohey John Manjang, suggesting that the arrest might be an attempt to pressure Gassama and possibly lead to his dismissal.
Attempts to reach Mawdo Jallow, the deputy director of Parks and Wildlife, for further information were unsuccessful, as he declined to comment on the situation. The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) was also contacted but indicated that a confirmation of the arrest and detention would be provided on Monday.
