In a chilling global tally of accountability, justiceinfo.net (Putin, Netanyahu and the others: ten wanted heads of state) has spotlighted an elite yet infamous group: heads of state wanted for international crimes. This exclusive “club” comprises ten former and current leaders, with former Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh listed among the world’s most sought-after fugitives. Jammeh is currently evading justice in exile in Equatorial Guinea.

Topping this grim roster are figures pursued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both accused of war crimes or crimes against humanity. The ICC’s reach extends further, targeting Sudan’s Omar El-Bashir, while its prosecutor has also issued arrest warrants for leaders of Burma and the Taliban, signaling a broadening net cast over alleged perpetrators of atrocities.

Beyond the ICC’s jurisdiction, national and specialized courts are also in pursuit. France’s justice system seeks former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, now sheltered in Russia, for his role in Syria’s brutal conflict. Meanwhile, the Special Criminal Court of the Central African Republic has its sights on ex-President François Bozizé, who remains in exile in Guinea Bissau. Adding to the list, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled to India to escape prosecution at home, and Ethiopia’s Mengistu Haile Mariam continues to reside in Zimbabwe, evading justice decades after his regime’s collapse.

Yahya Jammeh, who ruled Gambia with an iron fist from 1994 to 2017, joins this notorious lineup. Accused of overseeing widespread human rights abuses—including extrajudicial killings, torture, and forced disappearances—he fled to Equatorial Guinea after losing power. His inclusion underscores a growing international resolve to hold such leaders accountable, no matter where they hide.

This world map of wanted leaders, as outlined by justiceinfo.com, paints a stark picture of justice delayed but not abandoned as courts and nations persist in their efforts to confront the architects of some of history’s darkest chapters.
