In a significant move to strengthen democratic processes in The Gambia, Cherno Jallow, a distinguished Gambian and veteran United Nations diplomat, has been appointed as the new Vice Chairman of the Gambia Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Jallow brings a wealth of experience from over two decades of service in global peacekeeping and diplomacy, positioning him as a pivotal figure in ensuring free and fair elections in the nation.

In a brief conversation with TAT, Jallow confirmed his appointment but did not provide further details.

Jallow’s illustrious career spans multiple continents and conflict zones, marked by his unwavering commitment to peace, security, and stability. A graduate of Gambia High School, Jallow furthered his education at the University of Dakar in Senegal and the University of Lille in France, equipping him with a robust academic foundation. His professional journey began in The Gambia, where he served as Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1997 to 1999, before embarking on an extensive career with the United Nations.

From 2000 to 2025, Jallow served in various high-stakes UN field missions. His roles included Civil Affairs Officer with the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (2000–2002) and the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL, 2002–2005), where he worked to rebuild communities in post-conflict settings. He later served as a Political Affairs Officer with the UN Political Office for Somalia (2005–2008), the United Nations Integrated Peace Building Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA, 2008–2010), and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO, 2010–2025). Jallow also held the position of Special Assistant to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General at the United Nations Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) from 2012 to 2013. His work in these volatile regions involved protecting civilians, fostering dialogue, and supporting peacebuilding efforts, often at great personal risk.

Jallow’s contributions have earned him widespread respect, not only for his professional acumen but also for his ability to inspire hope in communities ravaged by conflict. His efforts have brought pride to The Gambia, showcasing the nation’s commitment to global peace and stability. As a Political Affairs Officer, he played a critical role in navigating complex political landscapes, facilitating negotiations, and rebuilding trust in war-torn regions.

The appointment to the IEC Vice Chairman role marks a new chapter for Jallow, who is expected to leverage his global experience to enhance the credibility and transparency of Gambia’s electoral processes. The IEC plays a vital role in organizing and overseeing elections, and Jallow’s expertise in governance and conflict resolution is seen as a perfect fit for the position. His leadership is expected to enhance public trust in the commission, particularly as The Gambia prepares for upcoming elections.
