In a significant step toward addressing long-standing concerns over the handling of assets seized from former President Yahya Jammeh, the National Assembly has tabled and adopted a report by its Special Select Committee investigating the sales and disposal of these recovered properties. The development has drawn measured praise from Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), a civic movement advocating for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
The Select Committee was formed in response to widespread public outcry, including a peaceful protest organized by GALA on May 8, 2025, that highlighted alleged irregularities in the sale or management of assets identified by the 2017 Janneh Commission. The Janneh Commission had uncovered billions in looted funds and assets during Jammeh’s rule, leading to their forfeiture to the state after his 2017 ouster. However, questions persisted about undervalued sales, lack of transparency, and potential conflicts of interest in the disposal process.
GALA’s statement acknowledged the report’s adoption as “an important step in the national pursuit of transparency, accountability, and responsible management of public assets recovered from the former regime.” The group commended the National Assembly for exercising its oversight role, describing parliamentary scrutiny as “a cornerstone of democratic governance.” It particularly praised the courage of young Gambians who participated in the May protest, noting their actions demonstrated a growing youth commitment to democratic values and the protection of national resources.
The movement emphasized that the issue transcends finances, framing it as a matter of justice, public trust, and respect for the aspirations of Gambians who sought accountability during the country’s democratic transition. “Ensuring that these assets are managed transparently and in accordance with the law is essential for strengthening public confidence in governance and safeguarding national resources,” GALA stated.
The group called on the government and relevant authorities to carefully consider and implement the committee’s recommendations, warning that effective action is crucial to addressing public concerns and reinforcing institutional accountability. GALA announced it would thoroughly review the report’s contents before issuing a detailed position on the findings, recommendations, and its planned next steps.
As a movement dedicated to promoting transparency and responsible governance, GALA reaffirmed its commitment to constructive civic engagement, the rule of law, and strengthening democratic institutions in The Gambia.
The adoption of the report follows months of investigations involving testimony from over 70 witnesses and the review of thousands of documents. Public discourse has focused on whether the government will act on the recommendations amid broader efforts to combat corruption and recover misappropriated assets.
