The Gambia Police Force has successfully arrested a suspect and recovered a seven-month-old infant unharmed following an alleged child abduction in the capital city of Banjul, authorities announced today.

The incident took place on Sunday, January 25, 2026, when a mother traveling by commercial vehicle from Barra to Banjul briefly handed her baby to a fellow passenger while stepping away. Upon returning, she found both the passenger and her child missing.

The mother immediately reported the matter to Banjul Police Station, prompting a swift response from officers. Police launched an intensive investigation, including coordinated follow-ups and public alerts to aid in locating the abducted infant.

By Monday, January 26, investigators apprehended a 17-year-old female suspect in Ebo Town, where the child was found in her possession. The infant underwent a precautionary medical examination and was safely reunited with the relieved mother.

The suspect remains in police custody as inquiries continue, with authorities emphasizing adherence to due process and child justice protocols.

In a statement, the Gambia Police Force praised the public’s vigilance and cooperation in the swift resolution of the case. “We commend citizens for their alertness, which greatly assisted our efforts,” the force said. Officials reiterated their firm commitment to protecting children and ensuring public safety across the country.

Police urged parents and guardians to remain cautious when traveling with young children, especially on public transport and in crowded places. “Always keep children close and avoid entrusting them to strangers, even momentarily,” the statement advised.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity involving children immediately to the nearest police station or by calling the dedicated hotline at 9968885.
