The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has announced the promotion of Mr. Demba Sowe, formerly Assistant Inspector General (AIG) for Crime Management, to the position of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). The appointment, effective August 2025, follows the statutory retirement of the former DIG, Mr. Momodou Sowe. This significant leadership transition underscores the GPF’s commitment to fostering experienced and qualified officers to guide the force in its mission to serve and protect the nation.
Hailing from Kampassa Village in Foni Jarrol, West Coast Region, DIG Demba Sowe brings a wealth of experience from a distinguished career spanning over 40 years. Joining the GPF in 1985 as a Police Constable, Sowe rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional dedication and professionalism. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of The Gambia (2013–2016) and a Barrister-at-Law (BL) qualification (2016–2017). Complementing his education, Sowe has undertaken extensive professional training in criminal investigation, traffic management, crime scene analysis, and peacekeeping, both in The Gambia and internationally.
Throughout his career, DIG Sowe has held critical roles within the GPF, showcasing his versatility and leadership. He served as Officer Commanding Mansa Konko Division, Officer Commanding Anti-Fraud Squad, Commissioner of Administration, Commissioner of Interpol & Crime Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB), and AIG for Crime Management. Additionally, he was Director of Intelligence at the former National Intelligence Agency (NIA). His international service includes a notable stint with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) from 2004 to 2006, where he represented The Gambia in peacekeeping efforts.
The GPF High Command praised DIG Sowe’s promotion as a testament to his exemplary service and leadership. His extensive experience is expected to strengthen the force’s efforts to maintain law and order while advancing its vision of a professional, accountable, and community-oriented police service.
