The Government of The Gambia has hailed the successful completion of the review of its initial report under the Convention on Enforced Disappearances (CED), held in Geneva on March 18 and 19, 2025. The milestone underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to address enforced disappearances and uphold human rights commitments.

A high-level delegation, led by H.E. Dawda A. Jallow, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, represented The Gambia during the two-day dialogue. The team included senior officials from the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, The Gambia Armed Forces, The Gambia Police Force, The Gambia Prison Service, and the State Intelligence Service. The delegation was supported by The Gambia Permanent Mission in Geneva, headed by H.E. Ambassador Prof. Muhammadou M.O. Kah.

The initial report, submitted in 2021, was a product of inclusive preparation and highlighted The Gambia’s strides in strengthening legal frameworks, ensuring justice for victims, and preventing enforced disappearances since ratifying the CED in 2018. During the review, the delegation showcased measures to protect victims, hold perpetrators accountable, and align national efforts with international obligations.

Engaging constructively with the Committee on Enforced Disappearances, the Gambian representatives addressed the committee’s observations and reaffirmed their dedication to bolstering legal and institutional mechanisms. The government has pledged to implement the committee’s recommendations as part of its broader commitment to human rights, accountability, and the prevention of future violations.

In a statement, the Government of The Gambia expressed gratitude to the Committee on Enforced Disappearances, development partners, the Commonwealth Small States Office in Geneva, and all stakeholders who contributed to the review’s success. The country looks forward to continued collaboration in advancing justice and human rights protections on both national and international fronts.
