Momodou Justice Darboe, Editor of Jollof News Online, was reportedly arrested and detained by police at the Banjul Magistrate Court premises on Wednesday afternoon.
According to credible sources close to Police Headquarters in Banjul, the incident occurred between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., while Darboe was attempting to photograph individuals standing trial in an ongoing case.
Witnesses described the arrest as stemming from Darboe’s refusal to comply with a police order prohibiting photography at the location. Despite identifying himself as a journalist covering the court proceedings for Jollof News Online, officers reportedly ignored his credentials. Police Commissioner Sanneh allegedly ordered the arrest, after which Darboe was handcuffed and taken to the Police Headquarters in Banjul for detention.
In a brief conversation, Darboe confirmed his arrest to this reporter, stating that his only “offense” was performing his professional duty by documenting the court session.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Gambia Police Force Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Authorities have not disclosed whether formal charges have been filed against Darboe.
The incident raises fresh concerns about press freedom and journalists’ ability to cover public court proceedings in The Gambia. Media watchdogs and press unions have previously criticized similar detentions of journalists in the country.
This outlet will continue monitoring developments and provide updates on any charges, court appearances, or release related to Momodou Justice Darboe’s detention.
