The Gambian literary community is poised for a transformative moment as local author Saikou Jarju prepares to launch his debut novel, Rejected Cornerstone, on November 1. This powerful work explores themes of rejection, redemption, and resilience, shedding light on the often-ignored struggles of women and marginalized individuals in African society.

In an exclusive interview with The Alkamba Times, Jarju revealed the deeply personal inspiration behind his novel. “I grew up observing how society treats women who struggle to conceive,” he said. “Cultures often silence women, even when they speak on vital issues.” The title Rejected Cornerstone reflects this reality, symbolizing the overlooked potential of those society dismisses. “A cornerstone holds everything together, yet the rejected one is underestimated,” Jarju explained. “This book shows that even in rejection, there is purpose and strength.”

The novel weaves a narrative of characters grappling with despair and rejection, ultimately discovering restoration and purpose. Jarju’s writing process, spanning one year and nine months, was a labor of patience and reflection. “Every day was filled with observation, questioning, and crafting a story that felt alive,” he shared.

Rejected Cornerstone stands out for its contribution to literature on spirituality and faith, presenting them through authentic African experiences. “It brings African culture into the global conversation, offering a relatable and transformative perspective on resilience,” Jarju noted. He draws inspiration from literary giants like Chinua Achebe and Alieu Juwara, whose ability to blend African values with universal themes shaped his storytelling. “Their works taught me to root my stories in African realities while addressing human struggles,” he said.

Following the launch, Jarju aims to make Rejected Cornerstone widely accessible through local bookstores, online platforms, and social media. He is also collaborating with schools, libraries, and cultural networks to spread the novel’s message of hope and empowerment across The Gambia and beyond.

The November 1 launch promises to be a landmark event for Gambian literature, introducing a raw and compelling voice in Saikou Jarju. Rejected Cornerstone is set to resonate with readers seeking stories of resilience and transformation. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with a narrative that celebrates the strength of the human spirit.
