This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as South Africa beat Morocco 2-0 at the African Cup of Nations 2023 on Tuesday, January 30:
- South Africa upset much-fancied Morocco 2-0 in the last 16 of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro, Ivory Coast.
- Evidence Makgopa gave South Africa the lead just before the hour mark, and Achraf Hakimi missed a penalty for Morocco before they were reduced to 10 men when Sofyan Amrabat was sent off. Teboho Mokoena scored Bafana Bafana’s second goal in stoppage time.

Goodbye for now
That’s it from the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations.
There’s more last 16 action at the Asian Cup on Wednesday, though, as we bring you coverage of Bahrain against Japan and Iran against Syria.
For Morocco, it’s back to the drawing board as their quest for only a second AFCON title, and first since 1976, goes on.
For South Africa, it’s Cape Verde next.
We’ll be with you every kick of the way through the closing stage of both tournaments.
Oh, and did I mention we’ve also got the Premier League for you on Wednesday evening as Liverpool entertain Chelsea?
From this live page though, it’s goodbye.
I’m Kevin Hand and hope very much you enjoyed another rollercoaster of a ride and can join us again soon.
What a line up for the quarterfinal
No Senegal, no Morocco, no Egypt, no Ghana, no Cameroon, no Algeria, no Tunisia.
Nigeria and Ivory Coast have made it to the quarterfinals and so too, another previous winner in South Africa now.
But there has been some uprising in Africa from their smaller nations at this year’s AFCON.
Could Cape Verde, Angola, Guinea or DR Congo be about to write their names in history at the 2023 AFCON?

The World Cup semifinalists go out at the round-of-16 stage.
This is building up to be an African Cup of Nations to remember.
The minnows are upsetting the giants by the day now.
It’s hard to argue that South Africa didn’t fully deserve that though.
Morocco failed to register a shot on target in the first half and pay the heaviest price.
