Former Gambia U20 GK Pa Ebou Dampha is wrapping the lines in Rufisque and the Senegalese Ligue 1 for a reason.
Having made his debut against Wallydan, Dampha now has gone to make 7 appearances, featuring twice in the League Cup and assisting once against Sonacos.
Dampha kept three clean sheets in the last four games, which earned him the Goalkeeper of the Month award in the Ligue 1. Ajel de Rufisque FC are unbeaten in their last five matches, which takes them to third position with 31 points, two points behind Goree and Jaraaf.
Alkamba Times caught up with the agile goalkeeper as he talked about his steady rose.
What’s the feeling after taking the number one spot and playing in front of the fans?
“I was happy even though I wasn’t playing and even happier now that I am involved. I have played the last four league games. I was waiting for such an opportunity; it was hard, though. However, it’s down to hard work and believing in yourself. I am helping the team both on and off the field. I am happy to have my fellow countryman, Kaba Sonko. He served as a moral support, especially at times that I wasn’t playing.”
You were part of the batch of U20 that secured a contract; we saw little of you at CasaSports; what really happened?
When I signed, we were preparing for the CAF Confederation match against Étoile Filante, and I ended up playing the return leg, which was an away match in Bouake, and it ended 0-0, but the Burkinabe team advanced to the next phase. After that, I got sick but recovered and went on to play match days three and four. I became very sick in the weeks that followed when I returned. The coach that brought me there was sacked with his entire backroom staff, and things didn’t go well from my end after I wasn’t considered.
Good wins off late. Does that set a perfect time to meet Jaraaf ?
Our match against Jaraaf will be tough. They are leading us with two points. I am confident that we can win against them. Our fans will give us the needed support.
First award GK of the month, thrilled to win it?
I am looking forward to receiving the goalkeeper of the month. It will motivate and push me more; the award is more of a teamwork award. I always train hard and keep pushing.
What’s your target regarding your future?
“Real de Banjul and BST Galaxy all approached me, but I decided to return to Senegal and join Ajel de Rufisque FC, on a one-year loan. I am hoping to have a breakthrough and sign a professional contract, and I have the national team in check when the opportunity arises.”
