In a powerful display of compassion amid the holy month of Ramadan, renowned Gambian philanthropist Modou Turo Darboe has once again led his Vision Development Foundation (VDF) in distributing essential food supplies valued at more than D40 million to support fasting families and economically challenged households across the nation.
The culmination of the foundation’s flagship annual bulk sugar distribution took place today in Fajara, where community leaders, public officials, beneficiaries, and dignitaries gathered to receive and witness the handover of consignments destined for local distribution. The initiative, a cornerstone of VDF’s humanitarian work, underscores a tradition of generosity that has spanned over 25 years.
At the heart of this year’s effort was the provision of 15,660 bags of sugar, valued at D37,584,000, making it the largest single component of the aid package. Complementing the sugar were additional staples tailored to Ramadan needs: bread worth D520,000, dates valued at D172,000, tea at D98,200, and milk amounting to D217,500. Together, these items form a comprehensive relief effort to ease the financial strain on vulnerable populations during the month of fasting.

Modou Turo Darboe, founder and CEO of the Vision Development Foundation, personally announced the successful completion of the sugar phase. “This distribution is not just about food—it’s about solidarity, unity, and ensuring no one breaks their fast hungry,” Darboe said. He revealed that the foundation is now transitioning its focus to another key Ramadan observance: preparations for Laylatul Qadr, including the purchase of bulls for meat distribution to enable proper iftar and suhoor meals.
Darboe emphasized that VDF’s support extends beyond this milestone. Daily iftar meals continue to be served at the foundation’s Churchills Town office until the end of Ramadan, providing a reliable source of nourishment for those in need.
The event highlighted the inclusive nature of Darboe’s philanthropy. Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Director of Public Relations Saihou Fofana described the program as a “continuation of a tradition rooted in compassion and national unity.” He stressed that aid reaches beneficiaries irrespective of religion, tribe, or political affiliation, complementing government efforts to support the underprivileged during religious seasons.
Beneficiaries and community leaders expressed deep gratitude for the consistent support. National Assembly Member for Foni Brefet I, Amie Colley, praised the foundation’s long-standing commitment. “For over twenty-five years, we have received sugar and other forms of support. He knows neither Christian nor Muslim, neither tribe nor ethnicity. Like he always says, ‘One Gambia, One People,’” she said, noting that Darboe’s assistance predates and transcends political changes.
Echoing her sentiments, Hon. Omar Darboe, National Assembly Member for Upper Nuimi, urged recipients to offer prayers for Darboe’s health and longevity. “No one can truly repay someone who provides food for those fasting to break their fast with,” he remarked. “Prayers remain our greatest form of gratitude.”
The Vision Development Foundation’s Ramadan outreach has become a symbol of hope and national solidarity in The Gambia. As the holy month progresses, Darboe’s unwavering dedication continues to inspire collective efforts toward a hunger-free society, reminding all that charity and empathy remain powerful forces for good.
