President Barrow Delivers 60th Independence Anniversary Address Emphasizing Unity and Self-Reliance

President Adama Barrow addressed a diverse assembly in a vibrant ceremony commemorating The Gambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary, including  President Faye of Senegal, President Embalo of Bissau, and the Emir of Kano.

The event’s theme, “Marching in Solidarity for Self-Reliance and National Development,” was central to President Barrow’s message. He emphasized the importance of collective effort, urging citizens to “amplify efforts geared towards the strong, united, and prosperous country we envision.” Reflecting on the nation’s journey, he called for honoring the past while committing to a brighter future through resilience and determination.

Highlighting the nation’s progress since the pivotal 2016 Presidential Election, President Barrow noted the peaceful constitutional change of government as a testament to unity and collective determination. He stated, “This spirit should be strengthened to bind us closer as we march head-on into the future.”

Addressing economic advancements, President Barrow shared promising statistics, revealing a 5.8% growth rate in 2024 and a decrease in headline inflation from 18% in 2023 to 10% in 2024. He expressed optimism, projecting further economic improvement from 2025 onward.

The President also underscored the significance of self-reliance and solidarity, urging Gambians to look inward for solutions to challenges. He called for “greater solidarity, confidence, looking inward for answers to our challenges, and acting on realistic and sustainable solutions.”

President Barrow acknowledged their potential as the nation’s greatest asset in his address to the youth. He assured them of the government’s commitment to creating opportunities, stating, “Let me assure you that my government stands in solidarity with you, and we are determined to create various pathways for you to succeed here, at home.”

Concluding his speech, President Barrow called for unity and collective effort to build a self-reliant and flourishing Gambia for all. He urged, “Let us draw strength from the past and march forward, confident and determined.”

The 60th Independence Anniversary celebration served as a moment of reflection for The Gambia, highlighting past achievements and setting a course for a united and prosperous future.
