The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) has confirmed that Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, will officially start on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The declaration came after the Ramadan crescent was sighted in Garawol, The Gambia, and corroborated by sightings in multiple countries, including Senegal, Mali, Niger, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria (Sokoto), Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

In an official statement from its Kanifing office, the GSIC congratulated President Adama Barrow, the government, and the Muslim community in The Gambia, ushering in the sacred period with prayers for a blessed and peaceful Ramadan. The council expressed hopes that Gambians would find strength and devotion in their fasting and prayers while wishing for continued peace and prosperity across the nation.

Ramadan marks a time of spiritual renewal for Muslims. Muslims fast daily from dawn until sunset, dedicating themselves to prayer, reflection, and charitable acts. The GSIC encouraged the community to embody the month’s values of unity and compassion, fostering a supportive environment for all.

Amid health concerns, the council also urged Muslims to follow health guidelines and protocols to ensure safe monthly worship. As The Gambia prepares for Ramadan, the announcement signals the start of a season of faith, resilience, and togetherness.
