After months of anticipation, the GFF Division One League finally kicked off on Wednesday with thrilling encounters, dramatic twists, and standout performances. Debutants made their mark, comebacks stunned fans, and champions Real de Banjul announced their intentions by claiming top spot. Alkamba Times caught up with coaches, players for reactions and post-match reflections.
Brikama United 5–4 Gambia Dutch Lions, Historic comeback at the Box Bar Mini Stadium
Brikama United secured their first-ever victory over Gambia Dutch Lions after five attempts in one of the most dramatic matches of the opening round. The encounter saw Ibrahima Diallo and Bubacarr Kebbeh emerge early contenders in the golden boot race.
Dutch Lions dominated the first half and went into the break leading 4–1. However, Brikama United mounted a sensational second-half comeback to seal a memorable 5–4 win in front of their home supporters.
Sheriff Mankajang (Brikama United Head Coach):
“We had a very bad and poor first half, despite scoring in the first three minutes. Gambia Dutch Lions were the better side in the opening 45 minutes. We had registration issues; some of our starters were not cleared to play, and that gave us a setback.”
Mankajang admitted his side struggled to control the tempo early on but credited the fans for playing a crucial role in the comeback.
“The fans contributed a lot. They were the 12th man for Brikama United. The Democracy End really played their part. Their support distracted the opponent’s young goalkeeper.”
He revealed that belief and calmness were key during halftime.
“We told ourselves this was our home game and we could not afford to lose. We had to go all out in the second half. Emotionally, I was calm. I don’t take pressure when coaching. I knew our moments would come.”
Mankajang also highlighted the significance of the win, especially against a side that had beaten Brikama United home and away last season.
“Overall, it’s a very good game and a very good start for us.”
Omar Cham (Gambia Dutch Lions Head Coach):
Despite the defeat, Dutch Lions coach Omar Cham remained optimistic, pointing to several positives from his team’s performance.
“I take lots of positives from our game against Brikama. Before this match, I met them four times and defeated them all—two friendlies and twice last season. The red card changed everything; it was my captain and defender.”
Cham praised his team’s attacking organization and consistency in front of goal.
“Our attacking organisation has been classic since preseason. We always score goals no matter how big the opponent. Our structure, positional discipline, and work rate were very good.”
Sidiki Jawara opens the season in style
Reigning champions Real de Banjul claimed top spot after Matchday One, with Sidiki Jawara scoring the club’s first goal of the season—surprisingly from open play.
Known for his deadly set pieces, the former Samger left-back expressed delight at making an immediate impact in his second spell with the Whites.
“I am happy to score Real de Banjul’s first goal of the season. I want to pick up from where I left off. I have scored many goals in the league, and I want to continue that and also help keep clean sheets.”
Jawara believes his return will strengthen an already competitive squad.
“Real have a good team, and I believe my addition will add quality. I am hoping to help the team win many trophies.”
GPA Begin Season with Confidence, Bubacarr Jallow shines on debut
On-loan striker Bubacarr Jallow enjoyed a dream debut for Gambia Ports Authority, scoring twice and immediately declaring his ambition to compete for the golden boot.
“My target is to help the team and compete for the top scorer if possible. The quality at GPA is massive. I am happy to score two goals in my debut. I last played in the league in 2022, and I am working hard to score more.”
GPA Head Coach:
The Ports coach praised his team’s preparation and revealed the club’s ambitions for the season.
“We are happy to start the season with a victory, especially against a team we know very well. Our training was focused on settling the game early and scoring in the first half.”
He added that preseason preparation played a major role in their opening success.
“The team was in constant preparation. This victory relieves pressure and keeps us in contention for a top five finish. Ports is a big team—the third best in the league.”
While cautious, he did not rule out bigger ambitions.
“If the opportunity comes to win the league, we will take it. Our major plan is to challenge strongly for the FF Cup.”
