A former colleague of Gibril Tamba
With heavy hearts, we commemorate the life and contributions of Mr. Gibril Tamba, a respected ophthalmic nurse, and cherished colleague, who passed away yesterday at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. His burial is scheduled for today at 2 PM in Madiana Village, Kombo North District.
Gibril Tamba was more than just a colleague; he was a friend, brother, and mentor to many. From 1997 to 2000, we shared living quarters at the Farafenni Old Health Center while working as junior public health officers.
Throughout his career, Gibril demonstrated unwavering commitment, humility, and a results-oriented approach. His dedication, honesty, selflessness, and strong religious faith made him a highly esteemed community member.
Gibril’s passing is a significant loss to the Ministry of Health, particularly the National Eye Health Program. In The Gambia, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Community Eye Health Program, known as the ‘Nyatero’ or Friends of Eye program.
Gibril’s diligent efforts were instrumental in its success from its pilot phase to full implementation.
Known for his jovial nature and ability to uplift spirits, Gibril often used humor to ease the stress of rural postings. He fostered camaraderie among staff and strengthened ties with the community by organizing sporting events, such as football competitions in Farafenni. His commitment to his patients was unwavering, and he often worked late to ensure everyone received the care they needed.
Gibril Tamba’s legacy will endure through the lives he touched and the lasting impact of his work in community eye health. His family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew him will deeply miss him.
As we bid farewell to Gibril Tamba, we reflect on a life dedicated to the service of others. Known for his generosity, Gibril often went beyond his professional duties, using his own resources to support patients who traveled long distances for eye care. His compassion extended to his last days at the Serekunda Health Center ‘Sandaga,’ where he continued to provide support to those in need.
Gibril’s name is synonymous with kindness and dedication among health workers and communities across The Gambia. His selflessness was evident as he frequently asked his wife to prepare meals for patients recovering from eye surgeries, ensuring they were cared for even without family nearby. Our professional relationship transcended the workplace, becoming a bond akin to that of family.
As we lay Gibril to rest today, we pray that he finds peace in Jannah. His passing is a profound loss for me, my family, and all who knew him, yet we find solace in the belief that Allah’s wisdom is greater.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Ministry of Health, especially the National Eye Health Program, and all colleagues who stood by Gibril’s family during this challenging time. We extend our gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kanifing General Hospital and EFSTH for their unwavering efforts during his illness. Though his recovery was not meant to be, may Allah reward everyone for their dedication and care.
Allahu Akbar. The loss of my dear Tambajiro profoundly saddens me, but his spirit and contributions will forever be remembered.
My Tambajiro has fallen and no more! Unbelievable!
May Allah bless his soul and grant him the highest place in Jannah. May Allah forgive his shortcomings. Ameen Yarabi
