Residents of Sanyang are gearing up for a landmark event as the Sanyang Development Fund (SDF) prepares to host its maiden Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

Under the theme “Laying the Foundation for Sustainable Development of Sanyang,” the gathering is expected to serve as a pivotal platform for transparency, accountability, and unified action toward the community’s future growth.

Speaking exclusively to TAT, Abdoulie Sallah Fatty, Public Relations Officer of SDF and Ambassador of the Sanyang UK Association (SUKA), described the AGM as a unifying moment for Sanyang natives at home and abroad. “This event will bring everyone under one umbrella to accelerate development, exchange ideas, and chart new pathways for the progress our community urgently needs,” he said.

Mr Sallah Fatty highlighted SDF’s role in bridging divides between residents in The Gambia and the diaspora, fostering dialogue, and strengthening family and friendship ties.

One of the organisation’s proudest achievements, he revealed, was its successful advocacy that led the government to relocate the proposed deep-sea port project away from Sanyang. “Without the timely intervention of SDF, SUKA, and concerned citizens, the Gambia Ports Authority and Alport would have taken half of Sanyang. Thousands of compounds and established businesses would have been lost,” he stressed.

Beyond advocacy, SDF has supported the Sanyang Health Centre through various interventions and partnered with SUKA to repatriate and provide dignified burials for community members who passed away abroad.

Looking ahead, the organisation has ambitious plans to boost youth education and skills training, empower women and children, and install a community-wide street lighting system to enhance security and nightlife.

“We call on all sons and daughters of Sanyang, especially the youth, to join SDF and help realise these goals,” Mr Sallah Fatty urged.

As December 13 approaches, excitement is building in Sanyang for what many describe as a new chapter in community-led development and collective pride. The maiden AGM is poised to mark the beginning of a stronger, more connected future for one of The Gambia’s most vibrant coastal communities.
