The Champions of Africa at the Commonwealth Games beach volleyball qualifiers returned home from Ghana amid a rousing reception at the Banjul International Airport.
Team Gambia led by captain Sainey Jawo and his partner Mbaye Babou Jarra alongside head coach Pa Baboucarr Barrow and delegation arrived at the airport with beaming smiles as new Champions of Africa after winning gold in continental qualifiers in Accra. They beat South Africa 2-0 in the final of the Commonwealth Games beach volleyball qualifiers two days ago.
Members of the Gambia Volleyball Federation, Gambia National Olympic Committee officials, fans, family members, and media personnel were present to welcome the heroes and gold medalists who are now set for their next international challenge at the Commonwealth games this year.
Captain Sainey Jawo expressed gratitude for yet another continental supremacy.
“The journey was not an easy one as we met some very good teams in the competition but through hard work, commitment and dedication we were able to conquer the continent as a team to be crowned champions once again”. We are thankful to our coach Pa Baboucarr Barrow who gave us tremendous courage during training and match days plus a great tactical approach to guide us throughout the qualifiers”. Captain Sainey told TAT Sports.
He was also appreciative of the strong home support the team received throughout their preparations and competition.
“We owe a big thank you to the whole nation who were with us throughout with outstanding local and international support.” Jawo stated and called for national support “as the beach volleyball team prepares to join the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this year.
