In the early hours of Saturday, June 15, 2024, the community of Fass Njagga Choi in the North Bank Region was jolted by an incident that underscored the growing security challenges in the area. Amid heightened patrols aimed at curbing a recent surge in cross-border criminal activities, police officers encountered a dramatic confrontation.
The Fass Njagga Choi area has seen a significant uptick in cross-border criminal activities recently, resulting in multiple attacks on Police Intervention Unit (PIU) personnel. The PIU increased its patrols to address these threats, determined to restore peace and security.
During one of these intensified patrols between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., officers encountered Momodou Jallow suspiciously loitering around a Mauritanian shop. “When officers requested him to submit to a search, he refused and fled, carrying a bag,” recounted a police spokesperson. The situation escalated rapidly as Jallow tried to evade capture, prompting the officers to take decisive action.
“In the ensuing engagement, he was shot in the buttocks,” the spokesperson confirmed. The decision to use force was made after Jallow refused to comply and his attempt to escape. Following the shot, Jallow surrendered and was taken into custody. A subsequent search of his bag revealed three bundles of suspected cannabis, highlighting the serious nature of the situation.
Jallow was immediately transported to the Amdalai Police Station for processing before moving to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul for medical treatment. “He is reported to be in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the buttock,” the police spokesperson stated, ensuring that Jallow’s health was being monitored while under custody.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the police in managing security threats in the region, particularly those involving drug trafficking and cross-border crime. “Our officers are committed to maintaining security and will continue to take necessary actions to protect the community,” emphasized the spokesperson, underscoring the dedication of the PIU to address these escalating threats.
As the investigation continues, the community of Fass Njagga Choi remains on edge but is reassured by the proactive measures taken by its law enforcement officers. The event serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and dangers police face daily in their efforts to uphold the law and ensure public safety.
