Gambian specialist in obstetrics & gynaecology Dr. Awa Jah on Wednesday was among 15 doctors outside the EU to pass the theory examination in Sweden.
The Wednesday announcement saw a 40% passing rate in the exam held at the Lund University exam center between 11-12 March. The former Afrimed medical director passed both the theory and practical in her first attempt.
Dr. Awa, a member of WACS Surgeons, is poised to be the second doctor in Sweden after Dr. Lamin Jarju from the Gambia as she undertakes another high level in the noble profession.
“I am extremely happy and grateful to Allah. It’s a milestone to have the Swedish doctor’s license after almost three years. It’s stressful and frustrating, leading many colleagues to give up on the course. I am happy to make The Gambia proud, especially my former bosses Dr. Bittaye, Dr. Keita, and my colleagues Dr. Fatoumata Jarjusey, Dr. Dado Jabbie, Dr. Neneh Bah, and lots more.” She indicated
“The license acquisition is rigorous in Sweden, especially for medical doctors and specialists moving to Sweden. One must study the Swedish language, obtaining Swedish B / Swedish 3 and passing both theory and practical. Sometimes waiting in the queue for up to six months between theory and practical sections. The practical comprises 18 stations; one is required not to have more than two fails.”
*The language is not very stressful; you will get it along the way, but the exams are extremely hard. You study a lot, and the minimum that you can acquire your lesson is four years. I am so proud to achieve this within three years.” Dr. Away Jah added
Stress and anxiety
“The wait for the results is long, and that causes lots of anxiety and suspense. When one fails, you must do it all over, but once you pass, you move forward. You see grown-up men and women crying and becoming helpless. That day I decided not to cry in the exam hall.”
