As the world celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8, The Gambia shines a spotlight on one of its most resilient and accomplished female athletes: Sainey Sissoho Mboge. A pioneering figure in Gambian women’s football, Sainey has overcome discrimination, societal skepticism, and personal hardships to rise from humble beginnings to international stardom, becoming a FIFA ambassador and a powerful role model for young girls across the nation.
Sainey’s love for football ignited early at Abuko Arabic School, where her mother ensured she received a balanced education rooted in faith and discipline. “I started my journey at Abuko Arabic School when I was young because my mom wanted to make sure that one of her kids had to be in Arabic school,” she recalled. “I was very happy with that because I have a background of going to Arabic school.” It was there that her passion for the game took hold, setting the foundation for a career defined by determination.
Despite facing widespread discrimination—“it’s normal in our society here, women who are strong, they discriminate against them, they bully them, they put them down, they demotivate them”—Sainey refused to be deterred. “I overcame it through my character, through my resilience, through my hard work, through my commitment, through my understanding that what I want,” she said firmly.
One of the highlights of her career came when she scored a goal against France at the 2003 World Cup in Berlin. “That was one of my most proud moments because with all the suffering, with all the struggle that I’ve been through… representing your country and scoring at the World Cup, it was a dream for me,” she shared. That moment symbolized not just personal triumph but a breakthrough for Gambian women in a sport long dominated by men.
Today, as a FIFA ambassador, Sainey is deeply committed to giving back. She runs a girls’ academy, supports education, provides financial assistance, and offers mentorship to young women in sports and beyond. “Giving back is you’re doing it for the sake of Allah,” she explained. “I support girls, their education… I give back educational side, I give back when it comes to the financial side, I give back when it comes to the mentorship side.” Her generosity extends to the broader community, where she advocates for both women and men.
Sainey’s message to young Gambian women and girls aspiring to succeed in sports or any field is clear and powerful: “Never give up. Patience will give us everything. Rushing for success? Trust me, it will never work for you. But patiently, waiting for success will give you that opportunity.”
She also calls for greater support: “I want to see how women should be supported. Not only women, I support men… I give back to my community in different ways.”
Sainey Sissoho Mboge’s extraordinary journey—from a young girl at Abuko Arabic School to a celebrated FIFA ambassador—embodies the strength, perseverance, and vision of Gambian women. Her story proves that with resilience, hard work, and faith, barriers can be broken and dreams realized.
As The Alkamba Times celebrates the remarkable contributions of Gambian women this International Women’s Day, Sainey stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her legacy continues to empower generations of young girls to chase their passions, defy expectations, and lead with courage—both on the pitch and in life. Happy International Women’s Day to all the trailblazing women of The Gambia—your determination lights the path for a brighter, more inclusive future.
