Saikou Sawo, the flag bearer of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for the 2026 presidential election, has called on all eligible Gambians — with a special appeal to young voters — to seize the ongoing supplementary voter registration exercise and ensure they participate in the upcoming polls.

The supplementary voter registration, which began on April 8 and runs until May 21, 2026, is a critical 44-day nationwide process organized by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). It targets first-time voters who have reached or will reach 18 years of age by December 5, 2026, as well as those who need to update their details or transfer their voting location. Over 700 registration centers have been set up across the country ahead of the presidential election scheduled for early December 2026, followed by National Assembly and local government elections in 2027.

In his message, Saikou Sawo, a 37-year-old entrepreneur, U.S. Army veteran, and PPP flag bearer, stressed the power of the youth vote in shaping the nation’s future. He encouraged young Gambians to view registration not just as a civic duty but as a direct opportunity to influence leadership and bring about the “Golden Era” vision his party promotes.

“Every young person must register and make their voice count,” Sawo emphasized in recent statements and videos explaining the importance of voting.

He highlighted that the December elections represent a chance for generational renewal and urged eligible citizens to act urgently before the window closes.

The PPP has been actively mobilizing supporters during the registration period, aligning with broader calls from various groups encouraging high turnout. Political observers note that youth participation will be pivotal in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

Gambians abroad or those who missed previous registrations are also reminded to take advantage of the exercise, while the IEC has reiterated that only eligible Gambians should register in line with constitutional provisions.

Sawo’s appeal comes as parties intensify preparations for the December 5, 2026, presidential vote. The PPP, which recently unveiled him as its candidate following a merger with the Golden Era Party (GEP), positions him as a fresh, service-driven leader focused on national development.

Voters are advised to visit their nearest IEC registration centers with the required documents and to encourage family members and friends to do the same. For more details on the process, the public can contact the IEC or check official announcements.

This registration drive is seen as a key prelude to ensuring credible and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the Gambian people.
