President Adama Barrow on Saturday officially inaugurated the Abuko–Banjulinding Road, a key section of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Lot 5 Nationwide Roads Project, describing improved road infrastructure as a critical foundation for The Gambia’s long-term development.
The ceremony, held in Abuko, marked the opening of the approximately 4-kilometer Tabokoto–Abuko–Banjulinding corridor. It forms part of the larger Lot 5 project in the West Coast Region, which is fully funded by the Government of The Gambia, constructed by Bologel Limited, and supervised by the National Roads Authority. The new road features asphalt carriageways, paved shoulders, sidewalks, street lighting and proper drainage systems.
Speaking at the inauguration, President Barrow said the road’s completion comes at a crucial moment as the Greater Banjul Area continues to expand rapidly. New residential areas are emerging and economic activities are spreading beyond traditional centers, placing growing pressure on existing infrastructure.
He explained that the improved road will strengthen connections between communities, ease the movement of people and goods, and create better conditions for residential, commercial and economic activities. The President noted that his government has deliberately invested in road development projects to prepare the country’s infrastructure for future growth, rather than waiting for congestion, poor access and unplanned urban expansion to become major challenges.
“Improved road networks go beyond easing traffic,” President Barrow said. Better mobility, he explained, can attract investment, support businesses and give residents more efficient access to employment, education, healthcare and other essential services.
The President stressed the importance of maintaining the newly constructed road so that it benefits both present and future generations. He called on residents, businesses and road users in Abuko, Banjulinding and surrounding communities to take responsibility for protecting the infrastructure. He urged communities to respect road reserves and drainage facilities and to avoid activities that could damage the road.
He also encouraged motorists and other road users to follow traffic regulations, noting that good roads should enable faster, safer journeys rather than encourage recklessness.
President Barrow said the continued development of the Greater Banjul Area presents significant opportunities but requires proper planning and infrastructure to support sustainable urban growth. He described the Abuko–Banjulinding Road as more than a completed infrastructure project, saying it forms part of the government’s broader vision of preparing The Gambia for future development.
The President acknowledged the contributions of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the National Roads Authority, contractors, consultants, traditional leaders, local authorities, and the communities whose cooperation contributed to the project’s successful completion.
He further urged residents of Abuko, Banjulinding and neighboring communities to take pride in the investment and protect it so that it continues to support economic activities and serve the country for years to come.
President Barrow said the inauguration should also be seen as a renewed commitment to investing in infrastructure and transforming the Greater Banjul Area as The Gambia pursues inclusive and sustainable national development.
