The regional electoral commission in Brikama has rejected the nomination of Momodou Sabally, the UDP candidate for Busumbala constituency for not meeting the criteria based on Section 90 (1E) of the Constitution.
The regional returning officer Anthony Roberts Secka didn’t digress reasons for Sabally’s rejection but reminded the UDP Candidate of his right to appeal the decision within forty-eight hours.
Sabally’s rejection led to tensions between supporters and the paramilitary police stationed at the venue to oversee security during the nominations in the West coast.
Stones and tear gas were hauled on the roof of the electoral house where reporters and election officials were trapped for hours while police tried to control the situation.
Mr Sabally could not grant an interview with the press but has promised to summon a press conference soon.
Candidates vying under the UDP ticket including: Abdoulie Sowe, Kombo East, Abdoulie Bondi Foni Jarrol UDP, Alagie S Darboe Brikama North, Kebba K Barrow Kombo South, Lamin Sabally Old Yundum, Fatou Cham sanimentaring, Lamin J Sanneh Brikama South and Momodou Sabally, the second aspiring candidate contesting under the same ticket for Busumbala constituency all submitted nomination papers at the Brikama election bureau.
Almamy Gibba was the only independent candidate to join the race on the sixth day of Nominations.
Candidates who submitted nomination documents with pledges to rescue their constituents, shared their priorities with the media and outlined key areas of intervention once elected into office.
The PDOIS also forwarded several candidates including Victor P Jatta contesting for the Sanimentaring sest as well as  Pa Alieu Njie and Nyima Lisa Kujabi who filed for Old Yundum and Busumbala constituencies respectively.
