The Gambia home-based team, the Scorpions, received early elimination from Bissau Guineans, dashing hope of progressing to the next face of the CHAN qualifiers.

Bissau fought back to secure a last-gasp win in a post-match penalty shootout by 5-4 and progressed to the next round of the qualifiers.

The two sides clash on Tuesday in the first leg, with Alagie Sarr’s men winning by a goal to nil. Still, the Guinea Bissau side did not relent in its efforts. They secured a late equalizer and set up a double-legged tie against fellow West African side (Mauritania) for a place in the CHAN Cup of Nations in Algeria 2023.

The Gambia has never qualified for the CHAN competition in history are left disappointed after the final whistle was blown.

Gunjur United playmaker Haruna Rashid Njie failed to convert from the spot and eventually gave Bissau a place in the next stage of the qualifiers. Bissau converted all their five (5) spot kicks.

The game ended 1-1 on aggregate as both teams won by a goal to nil in their home matches. Guinea Bissau progressed to the next stage of the qualifiers as they won 5-4 on penalty shootouts.
