The Democratic Renaissance Party (DRP) formally submitted its registration documents to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday, 30 July 2026, marking a significant step toward participating in the country’s general elections scheduled for 5 December.
The submission was led by former Vice President H.E. Fatoumata Jallow Tambajang, who was accompanied by senior party executives. The move positions the newly formed party to seek official recognition and eligibility to field candidates in the upcoming polls.
Speaking after the documents were handed over, Tambajang described the occasion as historic yet only the start of a longer effort. “What we have achieved today is an historic moment for The Gambia, but only the beginning of our journey towards putting our great country on the path of peace and progress for all,” she said.
Tambajang, one of the country’s most experienced political figures, is widely expected to seek the presidency under the DRP banner. Party officials present at the IEC described the submission as the opening of a new chapter in Gambian politics and stressed their commitment to a transparent and lawful electoral process.
Under Gambian law, political parties must meet strict requirements before receiving formal recognition. These include collecting at least 10,000 signatures from across all regions, submitting a party constitution, logo and flag, and maintaining offices in all seven administrative regions. The DRP stated that it has fulfilled every condition in full.
A source at the IEC told Alkamba Times that the commission is currently reviewing the application at the technical level and that no decision on approval has yet been made.
The registration comes as The Gambia prepares for what is expected to be a consequential election. The emergence of the DRP adds another contender to a crowded political field and is likely to influence ongoing discussions about coalition-building and the nation’s future direction.
The Democratic Renaissance Party describes itself as committed to democratic governance, inclusive national development and the welfare of all Gambians. Its formal entry into the registration process signals a new voice in the national conversation just months before voters go to the polls.
