Alieu Jamanka, new deputy police spokesperson

Four men were taken into custody this week after being caught by police for siphoning rice from bags entrusted to them for transportation.

An informer tipped the police off about a particular Brikama-bound rice-laden truck carrying four men suspected of stealing the cargo.

Modou Njie, 46, from Mandinary, Buba Gaye, 29, from Bafuloto, Kalilu Manneh, 29, and Numo Mendy,42, of Faji Kunda were paraded before journalists on Friday at the Banjulinding police station as police prepare formal charges against the four suspects.

Inspector Jamanka said the the informant informed police that he received a tipoff from a colleague about a particular truck loaded with rice heading to Brikama with the four suspects who allegedly nicked tons of rice supplies by using a pipe referred to as a ‘trump’ to fill up other empty bags.

“They succeeded in filling five bags from the hundred bags loaded,” the deputy police mouthpiece told journalists.

Jamaica said the men ran out of luck in Abuko where they were intercepted by traffic wardens.

The men reportedly confessed to their involvement in several other rice siphoning activities.
