Gambian activist wins Man of the Year Award in German city

Seedy Saidykhan, a Germany-based Gambian activist has won a pretegious Man of the Year Award Oldenburg des Jahr.

Mr. Saidykhan is the co-founder of ‘What on Italy’, an online portal educating immigrants about their rights and laws governing Italian asylum system. He is also project coordinator for Wemigrants.com in Germany advising and coaching immigrants to integrate in the society and contribute positively in various fields in Germany.

This award is in recognition of his amazing work in promoting diversity and helping migrants and refugees in Germany on the legal means of integration and encouraging them to contribute positively in society.

Moved from The Gambia to Sahara Desert via war zone Libya to enter Italy through the Mediterranean sea, the ambitious young man moved to Germany for better education in 2016.


Ever since, he has developed passion for advocacy through his work as migrant assistant, radio presenter and project manager for his own show ‘The Seedy Show’ which raises awareness on issues of integration, racism and cultural inclusive diversity.

Shortly after receiving the award, he said: “I would like to thank you all for your support and encouragement and also the people of Oldenburg for nominating me for this amazing award of Oldenbruger des Jahr . Thank you all. I am deeply honored to receive this Award.”

“To be recognized by my peers for work on something as important as diversity, and to be certified about it, is very special. It is really humbling to receive the award in the presence tonight of so many leaders, real giants of our profession. I would like to recognize one person in particular who has been an enduring inspiration to me in the fight for justice and equality, and his support makes this work easier for me; Tom Tziros thank you for everything,” he added.

He explained that he felt good and motivated as this has never happened before and he recalled in 2018 when their team got nominated and crowned with integration prize.

“But getting my name in the nomination is really surprising and as well as motivating. This will encourage me to work even harder. Thank you all once again. Thank to Oldenburg City and imagine my excitement to hear that I had been nominated as a candidate for Man of the Year Award.”

“Your confidence in me and in my abilities is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for recommending me for this prestigious award.”

“I also wanted to take a moment to thank my followers for your help, support, encouragement, throughout this year. It’s comforting to know that I have such caring people surrounding me. Thank you”.

Mr. Sainey M.K. Marenah is a Prominent Gambian journalist, founding editor The Alkamba Times and formerly head of communications at the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) and Communications and PR Consultant for The Gambia Pilot Program, under Gamworks. Mr. Marenah served as the Social media Strategist and Editor at Gambia Radio and Television Services. He is also the Banjul Correspondent for Voice of America Radio. Sainey is a human rights and developmental journalist who has carved a strong niche particularly in new media environments in the Gambian media industry. Mr. Marenah began his career as a junior reporter with the Point Newspaper in the Gambia in 2008 and rose through the ranks to become Chief correspondent before moving to The Standard Newspaper also in Banjul as Editorial Assistant and head of News. He is a household name in the Gambia’s media industry having covered some of the most important stories in the former and current government. These include the high profile treason cases including the Trial of Former military chiefs in Banjul in 2009 to 2012. Following his arrest and imprisonment by the former regime of President, Yahya Jammeh in 2014, Marenah moved to Dakar Senegal where he continues to practice Journalism freelancing for various local and international Media organization’s including the BBC, Al-Jazeera, VOA, and ZDF TV in Germany among others. He is the co-Founder of the Banjul Based Media Center for Research and Development; an institution specialized in research and development undertakings. As a journalist and Communication Expert, focused on supporting the Gambia's transitional process, Mr Marenah continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a viable media and communications platform that engages necessary tools and action to increase civic participation and awareness of the needs of transitional governance to strengthen the current move towards democratization. Mr. Marenah has traveled extensively as a professional journalist in both Europe, Africa and United States and attended several local and international media trainings.
