Abdourahman Ceesay, a prominent judo athlete from The Gambia, has been awarded a prestigious scholarship and is embarking on a significant journey in France.

This scholarship provides Ceesay with a unique opportunity to train alongside some of the world’s top judo practitioners. Under the guidance of internationally recognized coaches, he has refined advanced throwing techniques, ground-fighting strategies, and defensive maneuvers, improving his overall performance.

Ceesay noted the impact of the training, stating, “This high-level technical training was complemented by personalized feedback and one-on-one coaching sessions, which helped me identify and work on specific areas of improvement. The experience has transformed me into a more skilled and confident judoka, capable of competing at an elite level.”

Judo is among the least developed sports in The Gambia, but a significant turning point has arrived with Abdourahman Ceesay’s scholarship opportunity in France. Ceesay is dedicated to applying the knowledge and skills he acquires during his training to uplift the sport in his home country.

“The knowledge and skills I will be taking back will be transferred to local athletes and coaches, creating a ripple effect that will elevate the standard of judo in The Gambia,” he stated. “This experience has the potential to inspire a new generation of judokas and strengthen the connections between our local judo community and international organizations.”

Building Infrastructure and Capacity

The scholarship, funded by the Olympic Solidarity Program, has also improved judo infrastructure in the Gambia. With travel allowances, Abdourahman Ceesay acquired essential equipment, including 50 judo gis (uniforms), 10 adult judo belts, 11 rolls of 50m mats, 600 50mm metal medals, and 300 70mm metal medals. It also provided national passports and an international judo license for home-based athletes. Additionally, it covered judo club rental fees for over two years.

Ceesay noted, “These resources have allowed us to organize local judo tournaments, workshops, and boot camps, providing essential opportunities for athletes to train, compete, and showcase their talents.”

This scholarship’s influence extends beyond individual development, inspiring a new generation of Gambian judokas. Notable improvements in the sport’s infrastructure and the potential benefits of international training also encourage local athletes.
