A record number of Gambian footballers have progressed to the second qualifying rounds of UEFA club competitions, with several players playing decisive roles for their clubs across the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Conference League.
UEFA Champions League
Shamrock Rovers 5-1 Floriana (5-3 aggregate)
Maltese champions Floriana squandered their first-leg advantage as they suffered a heavy defeat in Dublin. The hosts opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Floriana responded six minutes later through Gudely.
The equaliser was created by Mustapha Jah, who beat his marker on the wing before delivering a pinpoint cross for Gudely to finish. However, Shamrock Rovers took control of the tie and added four more goals to secure a 5-3 aggregate victory.
FC Universitatea Cluj vs Dynamo Kyiv
Muhammadu Drammeh played 92 minutes as FC Universitatea Cluj were eliminated by Dynamo Kyiv after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat. Both legs ended goalless before the Ukrainian side prevailed from the spot.
Cluj’s goalkeeper produced an impressive display, making several crucial saves, while Dynamo Kyiv also struck the woodwork. Drammeh came close to scoring the winner, but his effort failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Despite the defeat, Cluj will continue their European campaign in the UEFA Conference League, where they will face Norwegian side Brann.
Győr 2-2 Víkingur
Hungarian champions Győr were eliminated by Víkingur on aggregate despite a 2-2 draw in the second leg. Their European campaign will now continue in the UEFA Conference League, where they will face Bosnian side Borac Banja Luka in the second qualifying round.
Riga FC 3-2 Ararat-Armenia
Muhammed Badammosi registered an assist as Riga FC secured progression to the second qualifying round. The Latvian side will now face North Macedonian outfit Vardar.
KuPS Advance
Gambian midfielder Saikou Touray came on as a substitute for Engvall as Finnish side KuPS secured qualification. They will now take on Azerbaijani club Sabah in the next round.
UEFA Conference League
Paide Continue European Run
Gambian forward Pa Modou Sohna scored his sixth goal of the season to give Paide the lead against Lithuanian side Hegelmann. Sohna unleashed a powerful long-range strike to break the deadlock.
Later in the match, Abdourahman Badammosi doubled Paide’s advantage after latching onto a pass from Sohna. The Gambian attacker controlled the ball expertly, beat his marker, and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper. Badammosi has now scored four goals in his last five matches in all competitions.
Levadia Cruise Through
Estonian champions Levadia recorded the biggest aggregate victory of the round, cruising through 10-0 overall. Gambian striker Bubacarr Tambedou found the net in the 70th minute as Levadia sealed a dominant qualification. They will now face Swedish giants IFK Göteborg.
Shkëndija Progress
North Macedonian champions Shkëndija secured a 1-0 home victory to progress and set up a second-round clash against Slovenian side Bravo.
Saidy on Target for RFS
Latvian champions RFS completed a 4-1 aggregate victory over Glentoran. Modou Saidy opened his account in this season’s UEFA Conference League qualifiers when he reacted quickest to a goal-bound effort, making contact with the ball before slotting home.
After four appearances in the competition’s qualifiers, Saidy finally got off the mark and helped RFS book their place in the next round.
