In its commitment to advancing human rights and gender equality, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) unveiled the Human Development Report 2023-2024 on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024.

This year’s Report offers significant insights and analyses of crucial global issues, delivering valuable perspectives on trends, challenges, and opportunities in human development.

The 2023/24 Human Development Report assesses the dangerous gridlock resulting from uneven development progress, intensifying inequality, and escalating political polarization, which must be urgently tackled. The Report emphasizes how global interdependence is being reconfigured and proposes a path forward where multilateralism plays a pivotal role.

The report is titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World.”

Mandisa Mashologu, the UNDP Resident Representative to The Gambia, said the Report serves as a blueprint for action—a roadmap for building a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future for all.

“It reminds us that working together can overcome even the most daunting obstacles and achieve our shared vision of prosperity and peace. As we leave this gathering inspired and invigorated, let us carry forward the spirit of cooperation that has defined our discussions today. Let us redouble our efforts to break down barriers, build trust, and forge new partnerships for progress,’ she said.

According to her, the 2023-2024 HDR recognizes essential realities and seeks innovative avenues for cooperation and unity-building spanning societal and international boundaries. It serves as a guide for action, urging every nation to contribute to advancing global public goods that serve humanity’s common interests.

“As we gather here today, we are confronted with unprecedented challenges, such as economic volatility, social unrest, and environmental degradation, that threaten the very fabric of our societies. In the face of such adversity, the imperative for cooperation has never been more apparent.”

This Report illuminates the root causes of our gridlock and offers innovative solutions. It calls for a paradigm shift in our approach to cooperation, transcending traditional boundaries and embracing diversity of thought and perspective.

The Secretary-General and Head of The Civil Service, Salimatou Touray, said the global community has witnessed a significant decline in the Human Development Index, marking the first consecutive two-year regression in its 34-year history.

“Therefore, we must reimagine cooperation, transcending traditional boundaries, and embrace the diversity of thoughts and perspectives.”

She stated that only by doing so can we unlock the potential for sustainable development and inclusive growth.

“As outlined by the HDR, prudent measures entail increasing the flow of funding to low and middle-income countries to support investments in national and global public goods. Revitalizing national institutions is crucial as there is a noticeable decline in confidence and trust across societies. Rebuilding trust in national institutions is essential, not only for fostering confidence in international institutions but also for promoting international cooperation. Therefore, taking proactive measures to strengthen trust in national institutions is prudent,” SG Touray told the gathering.

Abdoulie Jallow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, mentioned that the Human Development Report guides us through the complex landscape of global development challenges, offering insights and recommendations on navigating these turbulent times.
