7 Killed as Sprinter Van Crashes into Stationary Fuel Tanker in CRR

Seven people were killed and several others injured when a commercial Sprinter van packed with 26 passengers and goods collided with a stationary fuel tanker in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2026.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 05:40 hrs at YBK in Gambia’s Central River Region (CRR). The Sprinter was traveling from the Kombos towards Guinea-Conakry when it struck the tanker, according to a flash report issued by the Gambia Police Force.

Emergency services rushed the injured to Bansang Hospital for initial treatment. Four victims with more serious injuries were later referred to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.

Police officers quickly secured the scene and have launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Preliminary findings have not yet determined the exact cause.

The Gambia Police Force expressed deep regret over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. The Force wished the injured a swift and complete recovery.

In a statement, police reminded all road users that safety remains a shared responsibility. Authorities urged motorists to observe traffic rules, avoid overloading vehicles, and exercise maximum caution, especially on long-distance routes. Investigations are continuing.
