Koita FC made history on Saturday at the KG5 mini stadium when they handed defending champions and record holders Red Scorpion their first defeat of the season and their first loss since 5th June 2021.
The club’s unbeaten run of 46 games which stretches over two years finally came to an end.
Sanneh’s 39th-minute goal was enough for Koita’s to bag their third victory and back-to-back wins. The goal started from the left side through Juana who played a through ball to the second striker Ngoneh, whose shot hit the woodwork and resulted in dropping front of Alimatou who buried it home.
After the historical night, both coaches spoke to the Alkamba Times sports desk.
“It wasn’t an easy game, going 46 games unbeaten is a great feat. I am proud of the girls. Red Scorpions is one of the most established sides in the Women’s football category in the Gambia. Our game plan worked perfectly for us. Red scorpions attack through their wide sides through Fatty and Maimuna. They are the ones they use to attack. We made sure we sealed that side, and they didn’t have an option to attack. Fatou Jammeh gave us a tough time because she later came to the flank. I knew it would be difficult for them to score us after taking the lead. Our defence is one of the strongest when it comes to female football, our defence line is very established now keeping two clean sheets in our game against Brikama & Red Scorpions.” Emphasized Amadou BB Jatta
“This is the biggest win of the season for us. It will shape our season very well. The fact is that it is a victory that will give us the confidence to compete for the league we are just six points adrift with Red Scorpion It will motivate our players to work extra hard to make sure to get what they want to get in the upcoming games”
Choro on the other hand insisted her club will return stronger.
“Every journey has an end, the players felt sad after the full whistle they were crying the mood was very low. We work and plan for the game just like any other game. Our vehicle had a breakdown and we failed to have a proper warmup. I am saying congratulations to Koita FC, they beat us all hands down, some said their goal was offside but to me, it wasn’t offside. We wanted to reach 50 games unbeaten, but we took it in good fate”
