The Gambia, a nation of just over two million people, has become a symbol of hope and resilience in the global fight for justice. Its unwavering commitment to advocating for the persecuted Rohingya people has led to a historic decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC): the issuance of an arrest warrant against Myanmar’s military leaders for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
On November 27, 2024, the ICC announced it is seeking an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, for his central role in the brutal 2017 crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim population. This campaign, which displaced over one million people, has been widely condemned by international observers as ethnic cleansing.
Gambia’s Efforts Pay Off
The Gambia has played a central role in pursuing justice for the Rohingya. In addition to supporting a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Myanmar of violating the Genocide Convention, The Gambia’s bold stand against such atrocities has made history as the first African nation to take on such a significant international legal battle.
This effort was greatly supported by ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, whose leadership was instrumental in demonstrating the global commitment to ensuring that the Rohingya people are not forgotten.

This landmark action was led by Abubakar Tambadou, The Gambia’s former Minister of Justice, who had visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh and was deeply moved by the survivors’ harrowing accounts. His leadership, coupled with the expertise of Essa Mbye Faal, a prominent Gambian legal expert, has been crucial in securing international attention and action.

Despite this landmark decision, challenges remain. Myanmar’s junta has rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction, and the likelihood of the suspects being extradited remains uncertain. However, experts believe that the mere issuance of arrest warrants is a significant step in ensuring that these individuals face accountability for their actions.
Even if arrests are delayed, the ICC’s move has made Myanmar’s military leaders international pariahs, signaling that they will not escape justice indefinitely.
