As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Modou Turo Darboe, a prominent Gambian philanthropist and CEO of the Vision Development Foundation (VDF), has launched his annual Ramadan gift initiative by donating 3,100 25-kg bags of sugar to underprivileged Muslim households across the Gambia.

The generous contribution, which aims to ease the burden of rising food prices and economic hardships, underscores VDF’s ongoing commitment to poverty alleviation and community empowerment.

The sugar distribution targets needy families in communities such as Lamen, Banjul Sports Community, Busumbala, Latrikunda Sabiji, Jewswang, Tallinding, Bakau, and Fajikunda, each receiving 300 bags.

The initiative reflects Darboe’s longstanding tradition of supporting Gambians during Ramadan, when many struggle to afford basic necessities.

Speaking at the event, VDF’s Public Relations Officer, Saihou Fofana, praised Darboe’s generosity, noting that the distribution will continue throughout the month. “Some can afford sugar; others cannot. This donation is meant for underprivileged people who cannot afford it during the holy month,” Fofana said.

He emphasized the foundation’s goal of bringing relief and joy to those in need, echoing Darboe’s directive to ensure the supplies reach the most deserving recipients.

Community leaders and representatives expressed gratitude for the timely support. Malang Kujabi, Alkalo of Latrikunda Sabiji, promised a fair distribution to needy people, while Lamin Moro Jatta from Busumbala hailed the effort as a “laudable initiative” that will significantly benefit the community.

Ya Fatou Lowe, representing the Banjul Sports Committee, assured that the sugar would be equitably shared among the most vulnerable.

Similarly, Habib Ceesay, a councilor from Old Jewswang, commended Darboe’s tireless dedication, saying, “We salute him for his efforts and pray that Allah enables him to continue supporting the vulnerable.”

This year’s donation builds on VDF’s history of providing thousands of bags of sugar and other essentials during Ramadan, reinforcing its role in promoting socio-economic development in The Gambia. Darboe’s philanthropy continues to inspire hope, ensuring that families can observe the holy month with dignity despite economic challenges.
