The Government of The Gambia has formally responded to petitions submitted by the Gambian Accountability and Legal Action (GALA) movement, following a protest on July 23 that demanded urgent action against corruption and injustice. The petitions, delivered to the President and other public institutions, called for the prosecution of officials implicated in scandals, including the Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) tragedy that claimed over 70 children’s lives and the enforcement of parliamentary resolutions tied to a $30 million petroleum inquiry.

In a statement issued by GALA spokesperson Omar Saibo Camara, the movement acknowledged the government’s response within the 90-day ultimatum but noted that two institutions—the National Assembly and the National Sports Council—have yet to reply. “We remind these entities that, as public-serving institutions, they are duty-bound to address the concerns raised,” Camara said, emphasizing their role as representatives of the Gambian people.

While GALA prepares a formal response to the government’s reply, the movement remains steadfast in its mission. “GALA will never waver in its quest to hold public officials accountable,” Camara declared, reaffirming the group’s commitment to using legal avenues, including peaceful protests, to ensure transparency and justice. The official response to the government’s statement is expected in the coming days.

The July protest and petitions underscored deep public frustration with systemic corruption and unresolved scandals. The AKI tragedy, which devastated families, and the petroleum inquiry have become rallying points for Gambians demanding accountability. GALA’s actions reflect growing civic engagement, with the movement positioning itself as a nationalist force championing the fight against corruption.

The government’s response, though welcomed, has not fully satisfied GALA’s demands, and the silence from the National Assembly and National Sports Council raises concerns about institutional responsiveness. As GALA continues its advocacy, the movement’s call for constructive dialogue tempered with unwavering resolve signals a new chapter in The Gambia’s push for governance reform.

“We thank the Gambian people for their continued support,” Camara concluded, urging citizens to remain vigilant. With GALA’s formal response looming, all eyes are on the government and the remaining institutions to address the public’s demands for justice and accountability.
