A wave of grief has swept across The Gambia following the sudden death of Jeff Canteell, a British national who is a widely admired community mentor known for uplifting dozens of young people through personal support and guidance.
According to a viral social media post by close friend Fatou S. Ndure, the tragedy unfolded on Saturday evening between 7 pm and 8 pm. Canteell, who had been away for over three weeks, was walking to meet Ndure at a local restaurant when two unidentified assailants attacked him in an apparent robbery attempt.
The attackers reportedly tried to seize his mobile phone. Despite resisting, Canteell was overpowered, and the phone was taken. Badly injured but determined, he managed to reach the restaurant where Ndure was waiting. Upon arrival, he recounted the assault to her and others present before collapsing moments later.
Bystanders and friends rushed him to a nearby hospital, but medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival. Authorities believe the fatal injuries were sustained during the violent struggle.
In an emotional Facebook post that has been shared widely, Ndure described Canteell as “the only person who stood by me from the very beginning” and a selfless figure who “helped so many young Gambians” even when he had little himself.
“I lost one of the most important people in my life,” she wrote. “Jeff gave me everything he could… He believed in my dreams, and he helped anyone who needed it. I will forever carry his kindness and love in my heart.”
The Gambia Police Force has confirmed that an investigation is underway, with officers working to identify and apprehend the two suspects. No arrests have been announced as of Tuesday evening.
Tributes continue to pour in online with many describing Canteell as a quiet hero who changed lives through mentorship, financial help, and unwavering encouragement.
Community members have already begun organizing support for Canteell’s family, while calls mount for improved street safety in the capital area.
