In a heartwarming display of community solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan, the Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) distributed free Iftar packages to passengers at its main depot on Monday.
The initiative, aimed at supporting fasting Muslims, provided essential items such as water, sugar, food, and dates—simple yet vital provisions to help travelers break their fast, especially those still on the road as evening approached.
The event drew together GTSC staff and grateful passengers, fostering a sense of shared blessing in the month dedicated to fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity. Company officials emphasized that the gesture went beyond routine business operations.
“It’s not much, but it’s meant to show our dear passengers that our role is not only to transport them from point A to B—within Gambia and outside Gambia—and collect fares to run the company,” General Manager Seedy Kanyi said during the distribution. “But also to show them that during this holy month of Ramadan, which is a month of blessings, we care to share with them whatever we have, however modest it might be. And it’s significant to indicate that at least we are together in this.”
GTSC, one of The Gambia’s leading public transportation providers, operates depots across various regions and serves communities nationwide. The company has expanded services in recent years, including a dedicated luggage service for customers and a specialized “bush service” for transporting goods to remote areas.
Kanyi took the opportunity to reaffirm GTSC’s commitment to accessibility and growth. “As long as there are tar roads, GTSC plans to be there—as long as we have the buses,” he assured passengers and the wider Gambian public. The statement underscores the company’s plans to extend routes along newly completed roads, making travel easier and more reliable for rural and urban commuters alike.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the thoughtful gesture. Mam Jarra Loum, traveling to rural Gambia, received her package with a broad smile and thanked GTSC warmly. Another passenger, Papa Konateh, who was using the bush service for the second time, praised the initiative.
“This is a very good impression that the transport company is making,” Konateh said. “I really appreciate it.”
The Iftaar distribution aligns with broader traditions of generosity during Ramadan, when Muslims worldwide emphasize charity and communal support. By providing these packages, GTSC aimed to ease the burden on fasting passengers and reinforce bonds within the traveling community.
Such corporate community efforts have become a recurring highlight of Ramadan in The Gambia, with GTSC demonstrating consistent support for its customers through similar acts in previous years. The company’s actions highlight how businesses can contribute meaningfully to social welfare beyond commercial services.
As Ramadan continues, GTSC’s initiative serves as a reminder of shared humanity and the spirit of giving that defines the sacred month. Passengers departed the depot not only with full provisions for breaking their fast but also with a renewed sense of care from a transport provider that sees them as more than just customers.
